Umhlanga at a glance

Founded in the late 1800's, Umhlanga started as a small seaside town and has blossomed into the thriving vibrant hub is is today. The iconic coastline with it's landmark lighthouse and Oysterbox Hotel, pristine beaches and popular promenade is a hot spot for tourists and locals alike. Umhlanga gets its name from the Ohlanga River, which runs down into the Indian Ocean, and translates from Zulu as the place of reeds. 

Recreation

Umhlanga is a hive of activity, with plenty of activities to do throughout the day, as well as a vibrant night life. The Umhlanga beaches, next to the warm Indian Ocean, offer a long stretch of paradise for beachgoers, who can relax on the sand or swim in the ocean, as well as surf, kiteboard, snorkel, deep sea fishing, whale and dolphin watching. There is also the O'Connors Promenade which is a favourite for walkers and runners. The Natal Sharksboard is also nearby.  

Umhlanga Rocks has a vast array of restaurants, Little Havana, Remo's, Vovo Telo and The Chef's Table to name a few, offering a wide range of cuisine. The Umhlanga night life is lively and stimulating with no shortage of places to grab a drink and hang out with friends. 

Amenities

Besides the multitude of restaurants there are also plenty of shopping complexes around the area. The biggest being the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, in which one can find almost anything they need, as well as a selection of entertainment options such as Ster-Kinekor and the Wavehouse and a number of restaurants. Nearby there is also the Crescent Shopping Centre and La Lucia Mall. 

There are plenty of health care options around Umhlanga, with both the Netcare Umhlanga Hospital and the Busamed Gateway Private Hopsital in the immediate vicinity, and the Life Health Care hosiptal in Mount Edgecombe. And for those wanting to keep fit there are a number of Virgin Active Gyms and private gyms in the area. 

Umhlanga offers a number of good schools in the area, both private and goverment, ranging from pre-school to high school for all ages of children, Atholton Primary, Umhlanga Pre-Primary, Glenashley Junior primary to name a few. Crawford La Lucia is one of the the top schools in the area and it goes from pre-school through to high school. There is also a Montesorri Life Pre-School nearby, as well as a KipMcGrath in Umhlanga for extra lessons. 

Business

Umhlanga is a thriving area for local and national businesses.  There are many office parks around the area and the business sector in Umhlanga continues to grow and improve.
